How Many Fish in a 10 Gallon Tank?

Short answer: only a few small fish. A 10 gallon tank holds about 9 gallons of water once gravel and decor are in. Good options are one betta, or a small school of 6 to 8 nano fish (such as ember tetras or chili rasboras), possibly with a few snails or shrimp. Goldfish and most cichlids need much bigger tanks.

How much water is really in a 10 gallon tank?

Gallons = length × width × height (in) ÷ 231
Standard 10 gallon: 20 × 10 × 12 in = 2,400 cubic in = about 10.4 gallons of glass volume

With 2 inches of gravel, decorations and the water line below the rim, the real water volume is usually about 8 to 9 gallons. Use the calculator below with your tank's inside measurements and real water height.

The "1 inch of fish per gallon" rule

The old rule says one inch of adult fish per gallon, so about 8 to 10 inches of fish in a 10 gallon tank. It is a rough start for small, slim fish only. It ignores:
