Can Dogs Eat Chicken bones?

Short answer: no, never give cooked chicken bones. Cooking makes bones brittle so they splinter into sharp pieces that can cut the mouth, choke the dog, or block or puncture the stomach and intestines. If your dog already ate one, do not panic and do not make it vomit: watch closely and call your vet.

Frequently asked questions

My dog ate a cooked chicken bone. What should I do?

Stay calm and call your vet. Do not make your dog vomit, because sharp pieces can cause more damage coming back up. Watch for 72 hours for vomiting, gagging, a hard or painful belly, straining, blood in the stool, or not eating, and go to a vet if any appear.

Can dogs eat raw chicken bones?

Raw bones are softer than cooked bones but still carry risks of choking, blockage and bacteria. Talk to your vet before feeding any bones.

How long does it take a dog to pass a chicken bone?

Often within 24 to 72 hours, but a problem can show up during that time, so keep watching and call your vet with any signs.
